Only every fourth adult person in Poland has a habit of checking the amount of food in the kitchen before shopping and preparing a list of necessary products – says the research conducted at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW).

Quantitative research on a representative sample of households regarding food waste was carried out as part of the project entitled “Developing a system of monitoring wasted food and an effective program to rationalize losses and reduce food waste”. The project is financed by the National Center for Research and Development under the GOSPOSTRATEG program.

Only 1/3 of Poles properly manage food products during their storage to limit food wasting, i.e. they apply the FIFO (First In – First Out) principle “first in – first out”.

The researches identified the products that are most often thrown away in Polish households. Although with different frequencies, 62.9% of adults Poles admitted to throw away bread, 57.4% throw fresh fruit and 56.5% admitted to throw vegetables (excluding potatoes and other root crops).
