Research by Dr Bartosz Fotschka of the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Olsztyn has shown that the combination of eating raspberries and prebiotics enhances the health-promoting effects of the fruit, including a beneficial effect on liver metabolism.

Raspberries are a rich source of bioactive compounds with strong health-promoting potential, including antioxidants, which help protect the human body against many cancers.

‘Polyphenolic compounds found in raspberries exhibit beneficial biological activities, including regulating inflammation, lipid metabolism, bile acid synthesis in the liver and microbiota activity in the gastrointestinal tract’, says Dr Bartosz Fotschka.

His research has confirmed that appropriate stimulation of the bacteria present in the gut, through prebiotic supplementation, increases the efficiency of the breakdown of raspberry polyphenols into chemical compounds with greater health-promoting potential.
