Dr Wojciech Wachowski from the Department of Linguistics at Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz will carry out a project ‘Metaphor of death and dying in the oshiwambo and otjiherero languages’. He has won funding for his research in Namibia from the National Science Centre as part of the Miniatura 7 competition.

The ongoing research activity will provide a better understanding of the oshiwambo and otjiherero languages and will add to the existing literature. It is a pilot study and involves a one-month stay in Namibia, during which Dr Wachowski intends to obtain material for analysis from newspaper articles, obituaries, tombstone inscriptions and interviews conducted with speakers of the aforementioned languages.

Dr Wachowski has been researching the metaphors of death and passing for several years. The fruits of this research are academic articles and a monograph “Metonymies and Metaphors for Death Around the World” published in 2021.
