Researchers from the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław (UPWr) are working on a new drug against atopic dermatitis in dogs. It is expected to act on both the symptoms and the cause of the disease.
Atopic dermatitis is the most common allergic skin disease in dogs. It already affects nearly one in three pets in Poland. The disease has a genetic basis and runs with symptoms of inflammation and itching. Thousands of dogs are waiting for a safer and more effective therapy.
Currently, the treatment of atopic dermatitis in dogs is a complex and lengthy process. Veterinarians still only have drugs at their disposal that act symptomatically. Such therapy does not produce long-lasting effects, and chronic use increases the risk of side effects. Researchers from UPWr have an opportunity to change this. A new drug for AD is undergoing clinical trials in the Department of Internal Medicine with the Canine and Feline Clinic. It has both symptomatic and causal effects.
