Scientists from the chemical department of the Gdańsk University of Technology are conducting research on the design of new biomaterials that are safe for organisms. In many cases, they are biodegradable and are able to release active substances in a given time and precisely at the site of their implantation.

Thanks to the specially designed properties of polymers, it is possible to obtain, for example, a biodegradable implant that first supports the treatment and then disappears from the body; as well as a special, multi-layer dressing that covers the wound and releases healing substances, accelerating healing, or a tissue scaffold that allows the skin to regenerate after a burn and then disappears.

Polymers – synthetic or natural, biodegradable or biostable materials with a wide range of properties can also be a solution for targeted therapy, during which patients do not swallow pills and do not burden their liver, and the drug goes directly where its action is needed.
