An expedition to Svalbard (Norway) has come to an end, taking place as part of an international expedition funded by the Svalbard Strategic Grant – TONES of the Norwegian Research Council and supported by the National Science Centre “Opus” grant – NEOMAGRATE (IGF-PAN).

One of the participants of the expedition was Dr Grzegorz Ziemniak from the University of Wrocław, who together with eight scientists from centres in Poland, Norway, Sweden, Canada and Great Britain took part in collecting samples for geochronological, petrological and palaeomagnetic purpose.

The participants of the expedition, which lasted more than three weeks, visited a total of several dozen locations in western and northern Svalbard, crossing the 80°N parallel several times. The results of the measurements and analysis of the samples will allow verification of the tectonic structures documented in the Barents Sea and a more accurate determination of Svalbard’s position on the globe throughout geological history.
