Dr Magdalena Matkowska-Jerzyk, a journalist and bohemologist from the University of Wrocław, has developed a script for a documentary ‘The Czech trace of Henryk Sienkiewicz’, which presents the issue of the popularity of the Polish Nobel laureate’s works in our southern neighbours.

The interest in the works of the Pole, first in the Czech lands, then in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic, is a phenomenon on a European scale, but so far there has been no popular science study that would introduce the general public to this interesting issue.

The author spins a colourful tale in which Czech characters – including Associate Professor Roman Baron from the Czech Academy of Sciences and Lucie Zakopalová from the Polish Institute in Prague – reveal the Czech Sienkiewicz world to the audience. The novels of our writer, perceived by Czech-speaking readers in a manner different from ours, shed new light on his works and allow them to be approached in a non-obvious, non-pathetic way.
