Sundar Rathnarajan, a PhD student at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, will develop reinforced concrete containing seawater. The project will be implemented at the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin, thanks to funding in the Polonez Bis competition.

Thanks to the experimental and numerical research, it will be possible to develop the compositions of concrete mixtures with the addition of nanomaterials with a strong reactivity, enabling the binding of chlorides contained in sea water, which will consequently reduce or eliminate the corrosion of reinforcing steel. The project will be implemented in cooperation with partners from Technische Universität Berlin (Germany) and Sejong University (South Korea).

Sundar Rathnarajan specializes in research on the corrosion of concrete and the influence of admixtures to improve the durability of cement concrete. He has significant achievements in this field and is the author of many scientific publications in leading specialist journals.
