Researcher at the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław receives Nor-Feed Award

28.08.2018

Dr Kamil Sierżant from the Department of Biology and Animal Breeding of the University of Life Sciences in Wroclaw won the Nor-Feed-Award 2017 for his PhD thesis on the use of polyphenols in feeding farm animals.

Polyphenolic additives are a group of natural antioxidants obtained from plants that improve the work of the circulatory system. This is best seen on the example of so-called the French paradox, which occurs in the countries of the Mediterranean basin, where the population is less likely to suffer from cardiovascular diseases – explains the researcher.

In the case of animal nutrition, preparations containing polyphenols, e.g. herbal extracts or essential oils, may change the turnout of certain microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract, acting similarly to nutrition antibiotics prohibited in European Union. Polyphenolic compounds can also improve the condition of animals and their well-being.
