Best scholarly book in the field of Jewish history and culture in Poland

Dr Marek Tuszewicki of the Institute of Jewish Studies at the Jagiellonian University (UJ) in Kraków with his book “A Frog under the Tongue. Jewish Folk Medicine in Eastern Europe,” published by the prestigious Littman Library of Jewish Civilization, received an award for the best scholarly book publication in the field of Jewish history and culture in Poland.

In 2015, Dr Marek Tuszewicki’s book “Frog under the tongue. Folk medicine of Ashkenazi Jews at the turn of the 20th century. The lively reception in Poland of this book attracted the interest of a foreign publisher, the Littman Library of Jewish Civilization, resulting in the 2021 edition of “A Frog under the Tongue. Jewish Folk Medicine in Eastern Europe.” 

This is not a mere translation, but an autonomous approach tailored to a completely different audience. Among other things, the author dispensed with lengthy descriptions of Jewish holidays and rituals in favor of information necessary to understand Slavic-Jewish interactions.
